Analyzing EVs
FLEX Insights can identify patterns in interval meter data that are consistent with EV charging, allowing you to explore EV adoption and the energy characteristics of customers with detected EVs.
EV analysis can help answer questions such as:
- How many customers have detected EV charging?
- Where are customers with detected EV charging located?
- How does electricity usage differ for customers with detected EV charging?
- When do customers with detected EV charging tend to use electricity?
- How do EV charging customers align with EV registration data and managed charging tariffs.
Identifying Customers With EVs
Start by creating a Segment of customers with detected EV charging.
From Segments, create a new Segment and select Home EV Charging Detection from End Use Detections. Configure the filter to include customers where EV charging is detected.
You can combine EV detection with other filters to investigate more specific populations, such as customers in a particular geography, customers on a particular rate, or customers with high evening demand.
Once you have defined the population, save the Segment and add it to a Report.
Understanding the Energy Use of Customers With Detected EVs
Open the Report containing your EV Segment and select Load Shapes.
Load Shapes lets you explore the overall electricity usage of customers with detected EV charging.
Annual Usage helps you understand the population's overall consumption, while Seasonal Usage Patterns show how electricity demand changes throughout the day and across seasons.
Exploring Where EVs Are Detected
Use Customer Population to understand the characteristics of customers with detected EV charging.
This can help you explore how EV detection varies across geography and other available customer or property attributes.
For example, you can investigate whether detected EVs are concentrated in particular cities, postal codes, rates, sectors, or other characteristics available in your data.
Comparing Customers With and Without Detected EV Charging
Comparing populations can help you understand how the energy characteristics of customers with detected EV charging differ from other customers.
Clone your EV Segment and change the Home EV Charging Detection criterion while leaving the other criteria consistent. Add both Segments to the same Report.
You can then use Load Shapes to compare overall consumption and usage patterns, or Customer Population to compare the characteristics of the two populations.
Interpreting EV Detection
FLEX Insights does not rely on telemetry integrations or provided customer metadata. The platform models EV detection from patterns in interval meter data. A detection indicates that the customer’s electricity usage contains patterns consistent with EV charging. The method has been validated against large datasets, but it does not guarantee direct information about a vehicle or charger present.
Coming Soon: EV Charging Disaggregation
EV charging disaggregation will extend EV analysis by estimating the electricity associated with detected EV charging. This will make it possible to analyze not only where EV charging is detected, but also how much electricity EV charging consumes and when that charging occurs.
